Welcome to Creative Arts!

We are a new faculty embracing Art and Design, Music and Drama. We believe we are the most exciting faculty at Nunthorpe and our mission is to help pupils to fulfill their potential in, and to develop a lifelong passion for, the Arts. Our pupils are the artists of the future and we hope our own love for our subjects can be passed on to them. We further want pupils to be able to see links between the different art forms and become fully rounded creative artists.

Drama Department

In Drama students will experience a wide range of differing materials to stimulate their work and develop a growing understanding of Drama as an art form. The four areas students are assessed in Drama are:

a) Responding to different stimulus, showing appropriate use of drama techniques.

b) Developing, exploring and structuring ideas into a meaningful piece of drama.

c) Performing using appropriate performing skills to communicate intentions.

d) Evaluating the effectiveness of their own drama work and the work of others.

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3 the students will be exposed to a range of differing stimuli or drama texts and through these drama texts will explore issues, characters and their emotions as well as a vast range of drama techniques and strategies. All of the skills used at KS3 are directly transferable to KS4 and the GCSE course.

Key Stage 4: GCSE Drama

The areas of Assessment follow the Assessment Objectives set by Edexcel, the examination board used for GCSE Drama. Both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 are essentially assessed by the same assessment objective as this increases consistency and helps the students make the transition into GCSE Drama more efficiently.

The GCSE exam is split into 2 papers;
Paper 1: consisting of 2 workshop days and a written portfolio to support the practical work. (Which together is worth 60% of the GCSE)
Paper 2: consisting of one final devised performance, of around 15-20 minutes. (Which is worth the final 40% of the GCSE)

Thank you for visiting.

Music Department

It is the aim of the Music Department to enable every student at Nunthorpe School access to music to whatever the level of interest, commitment or talent.

Students enjoy developing musical interests whilst also developing important personal skills for the real world.

We try to look at the bigger picture by understanding music from a wide range of historical, cultural and social genres through active music making and listening. (We don't need to like it - just respect it but we usually end up liking it anyway!).

So, really, we try to do everything - and all in 45 minutes a week!

Students know that the place is always open for rehearsing at breaks, lunchtimes and after school and we have a wide range of instruments for all students to use when they wish, but they need to book a room.

Our concerts are a huge success and we don't advertise as we are always a sellout. We have different types of concerts: the huge Celebration of Achievement at the Town Hall; the cosy community Christmas Concert at the local church; and the students' own concerts where students choose, prepare and perform there own music.

So what about the lessons?

Well, at Key Stage 3 we try to access as much musical experience and knowledge as possible so we structure it into half-termly blocks of focus to make it easier. Throughout these we encourage all styles of learning and a lot of the lessons are where students are doing the learning not just listening to it. We like students to take responsibility and not wait for 'Miss' or 'Sir' to solve the problems because we believe our student are really intelligent and do it well for themselves.

At Key Stage 4 students can really develop their preferred musical interest, as we believe that is what studying music is all about, then we find a way of making it fit the G.C.S.E. We also look closely at all the other music out there to make us much more of a musician.

More than anything, we want our students to be comfortable being themselves, enjoying their own music without being judged and feeling happy in what we think is a clean, tidy and friendly environment.

Come and see us any time!
