Nunthorpe School English Faculty Homepage.

Welcome to our homepage, Parents, Students and Staff, you can find Documents available to the public here, Student Learning resources are available here.

"English is about creativity, imagination and expression. We offer students experiences that will enhance their abilities to read, write, speak and listen. A love of literature is central to our work. This is supported by a rigorous approach to the more functional aspects of communication. Through expert tuition and support, we aim to provide life-enhancing opportunies to students of all abilities that prepare them for the demands of the world outside school but will also enrich them and initiate them into the ongoing, cultural conversation of mankind.

At Key Stage Three, the emphasis is on the extension of the skills developed through literacy work in primary school. Students read a range of stories, novels, poems and plays and learn to adapt their writing to suit a variety of audiences, forms and purposes. In speaking and listening work, we try to increase students' confidence and challenge them to develop better listening skills. The SATs in Year 9 represent a measure of the progress that students have achieved through the first three years in school. Teacher assessments give a more coherent and accurate picture of the general standard of students' work over an extended period.

At Key Stage Four, we follow the AQA A syllabuses in English and English Literature. Students gain two GCSEs ultimately. We study a Shakespeare play, a nineteenth century novel, a modern play and a modern novel. Response to poetry is assessed on both the English and the literature exams. Writing is assessed both through coursework and examination, and speaking and listening assessments count for 20% of the English grade.

The key to success in English is a positive attitude."
