Welcome to our homepage, Parents, Students and Staff, you can find Documents available to the public here, Student Learning resources are available here.
The Humanities Faculty is more than the three discrete subjects of History Geography and RE working alongside each other. It is a team of committed, devoted staff who share common aims and goals in the teaching of their subjects.
The Faculty believes that Humanities has a special place in the school curriculum. It offers a variety of educational experiences both in and outside the classroom. This is through the range of teaching and learning styles, and the variety of field trips/outside speakers on offer throughout Key Stages 3 and 4.
Humanities subjects enable students to gain a wider picture of life and see how they have a place in our global society. It is one of the main areas in the school which best prepares students to become responsible citizens. The subjects also help bridge the gap between the Arts and the Sciences.
A vast array of issues are studied from moral, cultural and historical perspectives. These issues are dealt with through different types of information, for example statistical data, historical sources or personal experiences. Students are also given the opportunity to learn independently, develop higher order thinking skills and necessary life skills.
We aim to:
i) nurture in students a sense of interest in and an awareness of the world around them, recognising diversity in cultures, beliefs and lifestyles.
ii) develop a sense of self-worth in students, enabling them to make and sustain value judgements with confidence.
iii) ensure students have the opportunity to develop leadership skills and interpersonal skills, both of which are important to help students work positively in a team
iv) emphasise the need for tolerance, empathy and respect for the beliefs of others when dealing with controversial or sensitive issues
v) teach students the academic skills which are vitally important throughout the whole curriculum, such as literacy, numeracy, oracy and ICT
vi) focus on academic skills such as revision, research and problem solving, in order to aid those students who wish to continue in education of any type in the future
vii) use humour when appropriate and employ a wide range of learning activities to ensure every student, regardless of ability, finds the lessons enjoyable, stimulating and relevant.
viii) develop a safe and secure environment in which students feel able to approach staff and mutual respect is evident between teacher and student
ix) be responsible for the management of all students on the corridor, including the groups that have tutor bases, and show a consistent, united approach to the areas of rewards and sanctions
x) develop our relationships with students showing our care and support beyond the classroom through field trips, revision sessions and results day
xi) secure the best examination results our students are capable of through: the commitment of staff; consistency of approach to new initiatives; and the way teacher enthusiasm for the subject is communicated to students
