Nunthorpe School Modern Foreign Languages Faculty Homepage.
Welcome to our homepage, Parents, Students and Staff, you can find Documents available to the public here, Student Learning resources are available here. Thank-you for visiting.
The faculty offers French and German in Key Stages 3 and 4. There is also a two-year GCSE course in Spanish for those students who wish to extend their range of languages.
A number of themes are introduced, developed and extended to the appropriate level in Key Stages 3 and 4.
From simple interactions about themselves, their family and friends, students progress to discussions about family and friendship problems and other lifestyle issues such as health and fitness, smoking, alcohol and drugs.
Students learn how to express their opinions about school subjects and move on to compare schools in England with those in the foreign country, exploring the advantages of each system. They express opinions about school in more detail and discuss work experience, further education and career choices.
The environment topic begins with descriptions of students' own house and room in Year 7. We then look at places in the town and means of transport before moving on to environmental issues such as pollution and global warming and discussing how students can behave responsibly in this area.
Students begin by talking briefly about their own leisure activities and later look in more detail at issues such as pocket money, television, cinema, and shopping. Leisure and holidays form an important part of the GCSE course.
Members of the faculty have been active in our feeder primary schools over the last two years, so that many of the students coming into Year 7 have already experienced an enjoyable introduction to French or German. We aim to build on this foundation in Key Stage 3 by giving them the opportunity to extend their linguistic skills in listening, reading, speaking and writing through a variety of activities, including games, songs and ICT, which are designed to suit a wide range of abilities and learning styles. We aim to explore the culture and way of life not only in our lessons, but also through trips to France and Germany and visits by theatre groups.
We think that creating an awareness and appreciation of other cultures as a key factor in students' personal development and hope that all students will enjoy their language learning!
