Nunthorpe to Apply for Academy Status

We wrote to parents and carers in May 2011 informing you all of our intention to research the ‘pros and cons’ of Academy status for our school.

This research exercise ran from January 2011 to September 2011 and was comprehensive and wide ranging. The final report from our Working Party was published in September and handed to all governors for their consideration.

    Year 7 Tutor Evening

We would like to invite you to a Year 7 Tutor Evening on Thursday 6 October 2011. The purpose of the evening is for you to meet with your child’s tutor to discuss any pastoral issues which may have arisen during the first few weeks at secondary school.

It is important to note that this will not be an academic review evening, the date for this has been scheduled as Thursday 21 June 2012. You will however, receive regular interim data informing you of your child’s academic progress throughout the year.

The New Academic Year has well and truly begun!

We are sure you are all aware of our record results for the Summer 2011 examination season. We are incredibly proud of our students and all their achievements and would like to take this opportunity to once again say a proud ‘Well Done’ to all of them.

Of course, these celebrations are always short lived as we turn our attention to supporting the students who will undertake public examinations this academic year. We are always trying to find new ways to ensure even higher standards and maximum support for these young people.

Empowering Parents – the Delights and the Perils of Teenage Social Networking!

An increasing number of parents have approached us in recent months seeking information, help and support as they become more familiar with internet based social networking sites. These sites are an everyday feature of most adolescent lives in our technology rich 21st century world – made all the more possible by handheld portable devices (web-enabled smart phones etc.) so that sitting at a computer terminal to access the sites is no longer necessary.

It is perhaps obvious to state that a significant number of our parents are concerned about the potential dangers of social networking for their sons and daughters. Whilst they can see (as can our school) the potentially great benefits for young people of such technology, they also appreciate its possible risks – especially in the areas of ‘cyber bullying’ and ‘cyber grooming’.
