News

You may well be aware that the Government (as part of its current efficiency measures) made an announcement at the end of October that protected funding for our School Sport Partnerships (‘SSP’s) will cease in 2011. Nunthorpe has valued the support of the local SSP in supporting and driving the increase of high quality PE and school sport that your child has been involved in alongside our SPORT Faculty team.

BBC News have reported various news articles about the funding for SSP located below:

Overview

The Cleveland School Sports Partnership (SSP) is a family of a 6 secondary and 25 local primary schools that work closely together to significantly enhance the quality of sporting opportunities, through support in the curriculum, Out of School Hours Learning, intra-school and inter-school competitions, and school to club links. Nunthorpe School has exceptionally strong links with an established family of four local primary schools – Nunthorpe, Ormesby, Overfields and St Gabriels R C.

The fundamental aims of the SSP are to:

  1. Provide quality support for their primary and secondary PE lessons
  2. Increase the range of sports on offer
  3. Develop the variety of after school sporting activities
  4. Provide opportunities for students to experience sports competitions and festivals
  5. Develop sports leadership training and real-life experiences
  6. Provide links to local sports clubs
  7. Incorporate specialist sports coaches/teachers working with young people in schools.

The SSP is a constituted group made up of experienced teaching and coaching staff:

Partnership Development Manager (PDM) – A full-time role based within a sports college. They manage the SSP and develop strategic links with key partners in sport and the wider community with a clear focus on raising the percentage of young people accessing 5 hours of quality PE & sport per week.

Competition Manager (CM) – Another full-time role where a CM is based across 2 SSPs and hosted by a specialist sports college. Their role is primarily focused on raising the quality and quantity of competitive opportunities for all young people by delivering clear consistent and progressive competitive opportunities.

School Sport Co-ordinators (SSCO’s) – An SSCo based in a secondary school and concentrates on improving school sport opportunities by establishing a calendar of festivals to significantly increase participation in both intra-school and inter school competition, developing and enhancing out of school hours learning, providing curriculum support, whole staff training, volunteering and leadership, and club links across a family of schools.

Primary Link Teachers (PLT’s) – PLT’s are based in primary and special schools and aim to improve the quantity and quality of PE and sport in their own schools.

Empowering Parents – the Delights and the Perils of Teenage Social Networking!

An increasing number of parents have approached us in recent months seeking information, help and support as they become more familiar with internet based social networking sites. These sites are an everyday feature of most adolescent lives in our technology rich 21st century world – made all the more possible by handheld portable devices (web-enabled smart phones etc.) so that sitting at a computer terminal to access the sites is no longer necessary.

It is perhaps obvious to state that a significant number of our parents are concerned about the potential dangers of social networking for their sons and daughters. Whilst they can see (as can our school) the potentially great benefits for young people of such technology, they also appreciate its possible risks – especially in the areas of ‘cyber bullying’ and ‘cyber grooming’.
