Parent Steering Group

The Parent Steering Group was established in April 2009 with the aim of involving parents in the school improvement process.

The challenges of the Group are:

  • To move from a ‘them and us’ to ‘us’ culture to ensure parents are fully involved in their child’s education;
  • To ensure the best communication between parents and school;
  • To involve parents in the detailed planning for school improvement;
  • To understand the challenges we face as a school moving towards outstanding; and
  • To work together for the sake of every child’s future.

All parents / carers are welcome to join this group. The Group meets every half term on a Wednesday evening and is chaired by the Deputy Headteacher, Dr Tim Hughes.

Issues that have been discussed at previous meetings are:

  • Parents’ A-Z information booklet;
  • The new school website;
  • Curriculum information booklets;
  • The format of Parents Evenings;
  • Uniform;
  • Fund raising;
  • Communication; and
  • Every Child Matters consultation.

As a result of parental input by the PSG, the following school improvements have been secured since the group’s launch. This shows the success of the group and that parents have a real say in Nunthorpe’s development.

Examples of improvements are:

  • We now have a “Parents A-Z” that gives useful information to parents about our school;
  • We now have detailed curriculum information booklets covering all subjects and key stages that parents can use to support their child’s learning;
  • The structure of the Parents Evenings has now changed so that tutors speak to parents about their child’s progress for 20 minutes, thereby giving much more detailed information about their child’s well-being and development in school;
  • The structure of the school’s website is much improved and more user friendly; and
  • Communication channels between parents and school are improving, for example, by the introduction of our text messaging service.

If you would like more information or would like to join this group, please contact Laura Buckell by ringing the school phone number 01642 310561 and when asked, dial Extension 152.

    Nunthorpe’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)

    I am writing to you to give you more information on Nunthorpe’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), Moodle. I am sure many of you have seen your child accessing work through Moodle at home and also want to know more about what it is and how it can be used.

    Moodle is primarily a Learning platform on our school website, which is an online area where students can access work, extend their learning and take part in a wide range of learning activities. All students have a unique login to Moodle which allows them to access the different courses created by their teachers. Within these courses they will find their homework and links to lesson resources and other websites. By accessing Moodle with your child you will be able to find out what he/she is doing in certain lessons and also be able to help keep track of any homework.
