The centre offers a wide range of activities, available to children, young people, their families and the wider community.
Activities include the following:
- Senior Youth Club (13 – 19 years);
- Duke of Edinburgh’s Award – Bronze, Silver and Gold Levels (14 + years);
- Acrobatics;
- Nunthorpe Ladies Group;
- Adlib Performing Arts; and
- Yoga.

Duke of Edinburgh Award
Welcome to the Duke of Edinburgh’s (D of E) Award at Nunthorpe Youth and Community Centre.
Taking part in Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a real adventure from start to finish. There are no entry requirements other than you must be aged between 14 and 24 and have a real passion for getting out there and making things happen.
The award programme is run at three levels, Bronze, Silver and Gold. Each award level is achieved by completing four different activity sections (five for Gold).
People who take part in the award find themselves developing a lot of new skills, getting fitter, making new friends, going on expeditions and making decisions for themselves.

Award Levels
There are three levels to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Bronze, Silver and Gold. Individuals usually progress through the levels starting with the Bronze Award. The main difference between the Awards is the minimum length of time it takes to complete and an individual’s age.
Minimum ages for the different awards:
- Bronze – 14 years
- Silver – 15 years
- Gold – 16 years
Bronze Award:
In order to complete the Bronze award there are four sections that need to be completed:
- Service (3 months)
- Skill (3 months)
- Physical (3 months)
- Expedition (plan, train and complete a 2 day and 1 night challenge)
A further 3 months is spent on service, skill or physical.
Silver Award:
In order to complete the Silver award there are 4 sections that need to be completed:
- Service (6 months)
- Skill (3 or 6 months)
- Physical (3 or 6 months)
- Expedition (plan, train and complete a 3 day and 2 night challenge)
*Individuals need to complete either a skill or physical for 6 months and the other for 3.
Gold Award:
The Gold Award is currently not delivered at Nunthorpe but please call in and see us on a Thursday night 6.45pm – 9.00pm or call Tel: 01642 316818 and we will be able to inform you of the next nearest centre.
Your Duke of E Edinburgh’s Sections:
- Volunteering – helping someone, the community or environment, examples; caring for animals, fundraising, working with children;
- Physical – becoming fitter through sport or fitness activities, examples; football, tennis, dance, archery;
- Skill – developing existing talents or new ones; playing a musical instrument, learning a new language, sewing;
- Expedition – planning, training and completing an adventurous journey. Most of the training will be in preparation for this part of the award including; map skills, camp craft, safety and practice walks and expeditions.
The list of activities that can be done for volunteering, service and skill is large and new ideas of activities to undertake are always welcomed.

The award runs on a Thursday night (term time only) between 6.45pm – 9.00pm and involves a high level of commitment from award candidates to complete all the training. Nunthorpe Youth Club
The aim of Nunthorpe Youth Club (part of Redcar and Cleveland Youth and Community Service) is to ensure access for young people aged 13 – 19 years, to the opportunities they need to succeed as individuals in the wider community.
Redcar and Cleveland Youth and Community Service’s Mission 2007
It will:
- Promote citizenship and support young people in developing their civic contribution;
- Secure a range of leisure and cultural activities and experiences for young people in partnership with other providers in those areas; and
- Raise standards of achievement by offering appropriately challenging activity and experiences.
And will aim to:
- Provide a curriculum and programme of activities for which achievements can be accredited;
- Support access to specialist services;
- Contribute youth and community work staff to multi-agency teams which promote social inclusion;
- Provide information, guidance and support; and
- Provide the inclusion of young people in vulnerable minority groups where they are at risk of social exclusion or are already socially excluded.
