TSFE World Challenge

As Y12 students of the Nunthorpe School Sixth Form we have chose to be the first pioneering year to take part in a World Challenge project/expedition.

In July 2012 we will be travelling to our chosen destination of Ecuador, South America. The educational and life changing expedition will span over 3 weeks where we will gain independence, new experiences and cultural awareness.

World Challenge helps to develop crucial life skills that will set us up for life, including communication, teamwork, negotiation and money management. We will gain 70 UCAS points and an ASDAN A level qualification after completion of the World Challenge programme.

World Challenge was voted as one of the top four most important activities undertaken at school in terms of creating desirable employees. This will be really useful on our UCAS application and will definitely make us stand out from the crowd!

We can’t wait to wake up in the Amazon, trek up in the mountains and know that we are making a difference to local communities. Watch this space!

Empowering Parents – the Delights and the Perils of Teenage Social Networking!

An increasing number of parents have approached us in recent months seeking information, help and support as they become more familiar with internet based social networking sites. These sites are an everyday feature of most adolescent lives in our technology rich 21st century world – made all the more possible by handheld portable devices (web-enabled smart phones etc.) so that sitting at a computer terminal to access the sites is no longer necessary.

It is perhaps obvious to state that a significant number of our parents are concerned about the potential dangers of social networking for their sons and daughters. Whilst they can see (as can our school) the potentially great benefits for young people of such technology, they also appreciate its possible risks – especially in the areas of ‘cyber bullying’ and ‘cyber grooming’.
