In Summer 2008, a group of dedicated staff and students launched Essanyu-The Nunthorpe Help Africa Appeal. The link was created with the support of ODEF, a small charity in the UK. Essanyu means happiness in Luganda (a Ugandan language) and the appeal, which is linking our school with Ndekye School in Uganda, aims to bring happiness to everyone involved.

Essanyu - The Nunthorpe Help Africa Appeal

The aims of the project, listed below, fall in line with the ‘Make a Positive Contribution’ strand of the Every Child Matters Agenda.

Essanyu exists to:

  • Pursue links with Ndekye School with the intention of creating cultural, academic and social understanding between the two communities;
  • Broaden our own experience, particularly by visiting Uganda, which may help us to appreciate our circumstances and give us a more balanced view of global issues;
  • Assist the students and staff of schools to develop their school, to better provide for their education; and
  • Think and act with sensitivity for their needs, culture and beliefs.

As well as the general aims of Essanyu, the specific learning objectives for the 2010 trip are:

  • To provide our students with an experience of another culture;
  • To help our students make a positive contribution, in line with the Every Child Matters agenda; and
  • To provide our students with a life shaping experience by directly helping those less fortunate than themselves.

The trip, which is the first of its kind at Nunthorpe School, is very exciting and all the students and staff involved are extremely motivated and have a positive outlook for their visit with plans to make a lasting difference. It is a chance to see the positive impact they can make to the children of Ndekye Uganda and hope it will be a life changing experience for all involved. It is a tough challenge but one that, we hope, our school, friends, family and other supporters will rise to with enthusiasm, energy and generosity. The more of us there are involved with Essanyu, the more we can do to ensure that the learning experience of both us and Ndekeye School can be improved, enhanced and changed for the better.
