At Nunthorpe we strive to ensure that not only does every student matter but that they feel that they do. Although we are a very large school we have designed our pastoral system around 5 Houses to create a sense of belonging and healthy competition – 5 smaller schools in one large organisation. Every student can contribute, through whichever talents they have, to their House’s success. Each House has their own very specific identity and students really do enjoy belonging to their House. At Nunthorpe, the tutor is the centre of the student’s life. Tutors undertake pastoral care and also academic responsibility for their tutees. Students have half termly reviews with their tutor regarding their progress and set targets for improvement. Academic monitoring is the central backbone of the Pastoral System so much so that parents meet only the tutor at review evenings.
Where students require more extensive support the Pastoral Directors who lead the Houses implement support packages. Close monitoring and alternative programmes are established at Nunthorpe, such that students can be identified and helped where the need arises. In our inclusion unit, DANS, alternative education packages are delivered to support and boost student achievement. Additionally, Nunthorpe makes provision for emotional and behaviour support through SIG Mentors (Support Inclusion and Guidance) and bespoke packages for anger management, nurture group support and peer relationship development. Through our behaviour policy, rewards policy and support mechanisms, every student is given the opportunity to thrive and flourish in a safe and caring environment.
