At Nunthorpe School this includes the subject areas of DT-Product Design, DT-Food Technology, DT-Graphics, DT-Textiles Technology and GCSE courses are offered in all of these areas and also in Home Economics Child Development. At Key Stage 3 the study of systems and electronics is also part of the National Curriculum Programmes of study.
Design & Technology Food, & Textiles Technology
Is about allowing students to solve a variety of problems in a practical and innovative manner. It focuses on the understanding of how designers and manufacturers affect our lives; the development of technology in our society; how personal experience can relate to the world of work and industry.
At Key Stage 3,
Students use a variety of materials to design & make quality products. They have to work out their ideas, taking into account the purpose, appearance, user needs, costs, and a growing number of other constraints. The use of ICT features highly in Design & Technology not least in the use of computer aided design and manufacture (CAD/CAM). A number of free software packages, for use at home, will be offered to students during the first few years of study.
Projects range from the very prescribed to the very open and may involve the promotion of enterprise, innovation and risk taking. Where students identify an opportunity, design & make a product(s) and evaluate the whole process. Students may also experience how Technology affects their lives and learn that new technologies have both advantages and disadvantages.
At Key Stage 4,
We offer GCSE AQA syllabuses in Design & Technology with focus areas including Food, Product Design, Graphic Products, & Textiles. In all four of these Design & Technology option subjects the students are taught to design and make quality products. They would also be expected to develop discrete skills and competences dependant upon their chosen material focus. This could, for example include looking at How Design affects out Lives, The Historical Development of Product Lines, How a Product is Tested, Developed and Marketed, Materials Technology, and others.
We also offer a GCSE (OCR) HE-Child Development course. This involves 3 pieces of coursework including an independent child study on a given task of play.
