Geography is a study of the Earth on which we live, in this subject we study a range of physical and human geography topics.

We also look at the interactions that humans have with the environment and the impacts that this has on people and places. We have three full time subject specialists in the department.

Key Stage 3

Geography is delivered in Years 7, 8 and 9 at Key Stage 3.

Depending on their pathway when students pick options in year 9 they may be required to pick Geography for GCSE.

Year 10

We follow AQA Geography GCSE (9-1) 8035. The weighting of the topics in this exam are as follows:

  • Paper 1 – Living with Physical Environment 35% of GCSE – 1hr30mins 88 marks;
  • Paper 2 – Challenges in the Human Environment 35% of GCSE – 1hr30mins 88 marks;
  • Paper 3 – Geographical Applications 30% of GCSE – 1hr30mins 76 marks.

GCSE students are regularly assessed with exam questions, they will also have end of unit assessments and trial exams throughout the course.

Key Stage 5

At A-Level we follow the Edexcel geography specification, 8GEO for AS Geography and 9GEO for the A-Level qualification.

Year 13 Geography students also complete an Independent Investigation which is worth 20% of their final grade.

Assessment

Students will be assessed throughout their Key Stage Five studies with exam questions and extended pieces of writing. Students will also have end of unit assessments and trial exams throughout the course.

Paper 1 – 2 hours and 15 minutes – 30% of the qualification 105 marks
Paper 2 – 2 hours and 15 minutes – 30% of the qualification 105 marks
Paper 3 – 2 hours and 15 minutes – 20% of the qualification 70 marks
Non Examined Assessment (NEA) – Independent Field work – 20% of the qualification 70 marks
