Governor Pen Portraits

Sarah Potter – Community Governor & Co-Chair of the LGB

I worked for BT for over 30 years in a wide variety of roles, but most of my time was spent managing large teams of people delivering complex projects. I have extensive experience of leadership, strategy and planning which I hope to bring to the governing body.

I really enjoy being a school governor, I’ve served for over 20 years mainly in primary schools in various parts of the country. My own children have been in education continuously for the last 26 years, so I’ve also got a lot of experience as a parent. My youngest child is currently in the 6th form at the academy.

When I’m not being a governor I run a very small jewellery business which funds my interest in semi-precious stones. I am also a volunteer in the admin team for a national cancer charity.

My vision for the Academy is for every student to develop a love of learning and for them to achieve their best.

Jen Mrozik DClinPsy – Co- Chair & Community Governor

I am a Doctor of Clinical Psychology. I studied at Teesside University (DClinPsy). I work as a Clinical Psychologist in a specialist children’s and young people’s service in the local area. I love that my role allows me to continuously learn about all aspects of child development.

I have an interest in autism and neurodevelopmental conditions. My experiences mean I understand the challenges young people with SEN and their families face.

Throughout my adult life I have coached children and collaborated with young people in different fields and walks of life. I am passionate about improving young people’s opportunities and ensuring they reach their potential.

I also have an interest in leadership theory and practice, I am keen to bring this knowledge and experience to the governing body. I am always keen to learn how organisations develop safe, quality and compassionate systems that are well led.

I am the link governor for Quality of Education Implementation – all students including the most disadvantaged and those with SEND should receive a challenging and supportive curriculum which enables each student to access their next steps. Some of my personal values include fairness, equity, and justice. I try and live my values through my role as a Clinical Psychologist. I see this Governor link role as another opportunity to live my values. It’s a privilege to be part of a priority that promotes equal opportunities and encourages a levelling up ethos.

I love all types of sport and exercise. I played netball for a long time at a successful local club. I loved mentoring and coaching the younger players on occasions.

I love going to the beach and spending time with my friends and family.

I grew up in Redcar and I work in the Teesside area. I am ‘Teessider’ through and through!

My daughter attended Nunthorpe. I love the school’s drama performances. Legally Blonde was excellent! The DoE was also a fantastic experience to hear about.

My daughter had an excellent experience here. It is a privilege to hear about the various stories attached to the school and work with the people who belong to the Nunthorpe family. I see how committed the teachers are and it feels very positive to be part of the academy.

I would like the school to have a standout reputation for supporting SEN students and improving chances of young, disadvantaged students. I am here as supporter; critical friend and I want to ensure there is effective leadership throughout the school.

Alison Mitchinson B.Ed (Hons) – Community Governor

I am a head teacher of a large primary school and so feel that my skill set is suited to this role. I live locally, and all 3 of my adult children attended Nunthorpe School. All 3 thrived at Nunthorpe School and were well supported, they were and are very sporty and loved the Sport Provision.

Consequently, I wanted to give something back to the school. I believe I have a lovely relationship with the staff, and want to continue to support the school in any way they see fit. My hobbies and interests include the outdoors, going to the gym and reading.

Andrew Jackson – Parent Governor

I’ve worked as a Senior Manager for years in local industry and hope to bring a non-academic view to the Local Governing Body of the importance of areas outside of just excellent grades.  I believe attitude and willingness to work are key attributes for a bright future.

I’m keen on sport, and also through my children have developed an interest in the performing arts.  Having seen how much confidence it gives them, I believe it’s an important part of a child’s development.

I was born in Marton Manor and have lived in and around the area for my whole life, with the exception of some time spent overseas. I attended Nunthorpe as a child, and had happy memories from that time – Both of my kids have attended / are attending Nunthorpe.

I’ve got a lot of good memories of the school, and it feels like a place of natural development.  The gaining of qualifications goes hand in hand with the maturity that comes from reaching the end of Year 11 and realising that the school journey is over, and feeling ready for the challenge’s life brings.

I wanted to be a governor because both of my children now attend the same school as I did, and I was happy to offer support to the school body.

Like all governors, I’d like to see the school reach its ‘Outstanding’ status with Ofsted, but more than that, I’d like to see the school be recognised for its current achievements, academically, in sport, and also in the children’s attitudes and behaviours.

Andy Murray M.A B. Ed (Hons) L.G.S.M – Community Governor

I have been a school governor since 1994 in secondary and primary sectors. I have led creative writing curricular enrichment activities, directed whole school productions, produced school magazines and many other activities.

As a teacher I have spent 40 years at the “chalk-face” and was Head of English, winning a variety of national awards including “The Citizenship Foundation Bar Council Mock Trial Competition.” As a supply teacher, I have taken five different schools to the National Finals of the Mock Trial Competition.

Now I specialise in raising money for a variety of charities and community ventures. For the last 8 years I’ve chaired the Guisborough Town Hall Company and raised over £2 million. I’ve also secured funding for Middlesbrough Rugby Union F.C. to celebrate their 150 Years Heritage. I’ve recently produced two films for MRUFC in which students from Nunthorpe and their parents appear. I have also raised funds for various school where I have been a Governor.

I have recently stepped down as Chair of the Governing Body, but remain a passionate and totally committed member of the Governing Body.

John Hinton MI.BIOL – Community Governor

I worked for over 40 years in biotechnology research including senior management roles. I was a magistrate for over 20 years, and I also have extensive youth work experience. I currently work with the local Mental Health trust.

I enjoy walking in the wonderful countryside around where we live. I am a trustee for the Methodist Asylum Project in Middlesbrough and Redcar.

I can see the academy from the house where I live! My son went to Nunthorpe school. I am grateful for what they did in supporting my son through secondary education.

Young people are the future and I would like to do all I can to support the staff in giving them the best opportunities in life possible. I hope to be able to support the school in achieving its aims in encouraging the children in its care to be Ready (for all that life brings) to be Respectful (to others and to themselves) and to feel Safe (in what can be a challenging world).

I like the definition of a governor being a “Critical Friend” to the Head and Staff of the school. I hope to fulfil that role definition.

Rachel Massey – Community Governor

I am a Chartered Project Professional with a wealth of experience in the consultancy and the construction industry.

Having dedicated many years developing my expertise in project management, I decided to take on a new and fulfilling role as a school governor. Living in the local area, I am deeply committed to contributing to the community and fostering positive educational experiences for young minds. I also believe that this will enable me to be a key stakeholder for both perspectives.

As the Link Governor for Careers, I am particularly passionate about helping guide students to recognise the multitude of options available to them outside of school life, and I am a keen advocate in promoting STEM.

Outside of my professional work I love nothing more than spending quality time with my 3 and 7-year-old children, creating family memories.

I am excited to bring an alternate perspective to the governing board, with the aim of enhancing the educational environment and prepare students for a successful future.

Sally Lofts – Parent Governor

I have lived in Nunthorpe for 19 years and both my children attend Nunthorpe Academy.

I became a governor at Nunthorpe Academy because I believe education is key to success for our young people, and I want what is best for them and their peers. I feel that as a resident in the local area I can also bring a voice as a key stakeholder to the Local Governing Body.

I am a former secondary school Maths teacher with 17 years’ experience. My current role is held at Teesside University as a Senior Lecturer in Education. I feel that this can enable me to bring a wealth of understanding of the challenges currently faced in education by schools in terms of background and context.

Andrew Pendlington – Staff Governor

I am the Head of English for Nunthorpe Academy. I’ve taught at the Academy for 16 years, and I’ve been a staff governor since 2021. I chose to be a staff governor for Nunthorpe Academy to help bridge the understanding between staff and governors, and to help to challenge the Academy to strive for excellence at every level.

I’ve worked in the Middlesbrough area for 30 years. Before I became a teacher, I worked in management. My interests outside teaching include golf and football.

I have been fortunate to be able to build extremely positive relationships with students both past and present – and their parents. I have great expectations for the future success of the Academy. Hopefully, we will see the Academy produce academic excellence in a brand-new building where every student can reach their full potential.

Sue Harris BA(Hons) Education, MSC Accounting and Finance, PGCE – Staff Governor

I am a Maths teacher here at Nunthorpe Academy. I trained for my PGCE (Post-Graduate Certificate in Education) with the Academy and just loved everything about it; students and staff. I have some governor experience from my previous role at my children’s secondary school for 6 years, and 2 years as a co-opted governor for a local primary school in my area.

Prior to teaching at secondary school level, l I have worked in operations, management, business, finance and teaching in Further Education. I love studying – it’s a habit I have grown into and enjoy learning new things, from gardening to academia and everything in-between.

I wanted to be a staff governor here at Nunthorpe so that I can support the Academy to give the best possible education my students can get. I believe that this is what leads to positive outcomes for them all so when they leave us after their journey they are fully formed young adults ready to take on the world!

My vision for the future is that we continue to build and grow our successes and remain an Academy that puts the student at the heart of everything that we do.
