Nunthorpe Learning and Leisure Statement – November 2019

Dear Nunthorpe Learning and Leisure Learner and/or local resident,

It is with regret that I am writing to inform you that the NMAT Trustees and I have taken the decision to close Nunthorpe Learning and Leisure (NLL) with effect from 31st December 2019. This means that whilst classes will continue as normal until that date, unfortunately, from 1st January 2020 no further NLL classes will running.

After careful consideration, the Trust has reached this decision based on the fact that it has become increasingly difficult to secure the additional funding that has traditionally allowed NMAT to subsidise the cost of running the courses for the community. This in turn, has meant that Nunthorpe Learning and Leisure as a company is no longer able to guarantee that it can cover its own costs for delivery of these classes.

In accordance with the ESFA Academy’s Financial Handbook, any subsidiary company of a Trust (such as Nunthorpe Learning and Leisure) is not allowed to go into deficit, and/or to use ‘Trust’ money to be subsidised or supported financially. It is with this financial uncertainty and backdrop that the Trustees have therefore had to make the difficult decision to close Nunthorpe Learning and Leisure as a company.

I informed all tutors of this decision in writing on Monday 18th November.

As noted above, all classes will continue to run as normal until the end of this calendar year.

Thank you for your support and commitment to Nunthorpe Learning and Leisure and Nunthorpe Academy over the years.

Lee Brown
Executive Principal
